Go into the bios & make sure it boots from the HDD first.

You should run a check disk from the recovery console

Yep, still struggling - think some boot files were damaged when it suddenly shut down. can access the folders etc through Peppermint OS so the HDD is still ok. Just not sure how to go about repairing these. I'm a bit of a numpty - know some just not enough.

Any help will be gratefully received..

"Yep, still struggling"
You don't say whether you ran Chkdsk, here are some other links that may put it into terms you understand.

If you did the check disk already and the system still does not boot you will have to restore the corrupted registry hive.

When you boot on the CD, follow the prompts:

Press any key to boot from CD...

The Windows Setup... will proceed.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the Administrator password (usually empty).

You should be in the C:\WINDOWS folder. This is the same as the C:\WINDOWS folder you see in explorer.

Type: chkdsk C: /r

Hi Thanks for all the posts, very helpful but I'm still not getting anywhere

Gretti, have tried your suggestion several times:

Press any key to boot from CD...yes no problem

The Windows Setup... will proceed....this is where it hangs for many hours after checking the computer hardware configuration

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console... never get to this stage...

Think I may have to run it through as a linux machine or replace the hardrive and resintall. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Does sound like the hard drive has failed, or is extremely corrupted. You could burn a parted magic disc to boot to linux and check the drive.

I used peppermint the other day to look at the harddrive and all the data looks fine.

Just don't know what to do now..

Is your windows CD scratched? Try burning out the recovery console to disk and boot from that to run a chkdsk on your drive.

Another way.

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry That Prevents Windows XP from Starting
This article describes how to recover a Windows XP system (without using the recovery console) that does not start because of corruption in the registry.

Aha, thanks for the PC pitstop link - I only have the OEM reinstall disk - apparently no Recovery console on it.

We'll see how I get on with that disk...

Does exactly the same.... computer just hangs forever after saying its going to check the hardware configuration.

Still stuck. Any other ideas received gratefully

Sounds like the installer is trying to lock down a defective drive and is just hanging there. So is sounds like you should replace the drive and reinstall windows.
