disable VLC subtitles

Does anyone know how to disable VLC subtitles?
It annoys me why they are enabled as standard.

Ok, before anyone tells me to right click > video > subtitles > disable ..... I tried that, but when I drag another video into VLC the subtitles are back on. What a messed up feature.

Another method I tried is:
Tools
Preferences
Show all settings
+video
Subtitles OSD
(Uncheck) Autodetect subtitle files.

This method also works, but only temporary. When I close VLC and open it again, like most users would, the subtitles are back. It is as frustrating as trying to speak to a manager in a call center (There never seems to be one there!!)

Thanks all for your help.

lee123abc, dunno for sure, SWAG, (might work?), get things the way you prefer and THEN exit (once) using the option under 'file' rather than the handier 'X'. That forces Windows to 'remember' settings and use them next time. Maybe?

Thanks Ed, but I don't know what you mean by SWAG. Also VLC media player doesnt have a 'file' button. I tried two other methods of closing, but no luck!
