If the sound isn't normal (or anything you've heard in the past), it could be that the drive has completely failed. Should you eventually get it to "fire-up", backup what data you need off of it immediately.

This ring is not normal and goes off every 2-4 seconds. Do you think I will have the chance to get it to fire up and then backup information? If not, I guess it's time for a new hard drive?

Sounds like an over heat warning to me.

Are your air ports, fans, heatsinks etc clear of dust?

It's a good day when you learn something

"Are your air ports, fans, heatsinks etc clear of dust?"

Dan has a good point. Overheating could be the cause---insure there isn't a build-up of dust inside the machine as well. If so, clean it out with compressed air (Do not use a vacuum).
