Yes it's true if you did not do the adv. destructive recovery or sometimes called factory restore. The adv destructive recovery/factory restore....does in fact delete everything and recreates the file system etc returning it to "like the day you brought it home from the store". It is more likely to solve a virus related problem, then having it save your files. I would suggest testing the hard drive to make sure that is not the problem. Find the maker of the hard drive, go their website (seagate, western digital etc) and download the diagnostic utility to test the drive fitness. You will have to make a bootable cd from the ISO file that you download. Then you boot to the cd and do the short and long diagnostics. Sea tools by seagate (you need the dos version for cd) will test most drives.

If the hard drive is ok, I would recover your data and this time do the destructive recovery. There are a few ways to get the data off your hard drive. You can install the hard drive in another computer and copy the files over. You could use a linux boot cd and copy your files to dvd if you do not have too much stuff. But I would get the data before proceeding. If the hard drive fails the diagnostic then you need to replace the hard drive, which take you back to needing to get the data off.

You need to download the windows recovery console and burn it to a disc. You can get it here

Use imgburn to burn the disc

Boot to the disc, on your HP you tap the esc key when the system is turning on and that will bring up the boot menu.

Log into you console and type.

This should fix your problem.

Use someone else computer then follow the instructions in post 2 to burn the disc. Then take that disc, put it into your computer. Power your computer off, power it back on, tap the esc key, select your optical drive from the list and hit enter to boot from the CD
