Have you signed up with an ISP for internet-access that doesn't use a dial-up connection through a modem?

I haven't worked with dial-up for a really long time, but a few things come to mind. First, do you have a wireless card in your computer? If not, you'll need that. If you have a tower, you could either unplug the phone line and/or remove the dial-up modem.

You could also go into Device Manager/Network connections and disable the modem.

Also, check Internet Explorer under Connections and make sure the Dial-up connection is removed.

To expand a little on response #2: go to Start > Control Panel (view by small icons) > Internet Options > Connections
