Desktop Shutting Down Seconds After Startup

September 1, 2010 at 15:54:39
Specs: XP, 2.6 Celoron
HP Pavillion Desktop-2.6 celeron-40g hdd Purchased 12-09-03

As stated above system will shut off before the XP logo appears on the monitor. If started in safe mode it does the same, shutting down before getting to safe mode. If you choose F1 on startup and put it into setup mode it will stay on until you choose to turn it off. Also noticed that when it shuts down prematurely the two internal fans stop but the power supply and its fan stay on.(Don't know if this is normal or not.
Thanks, Paul

You will need to use your xp disc/recovery media or recovery partition to repair your XP installation. Do you still have any of the things I listed above? if so which one so I can give you the steps.

with your OS Disk, try booting to it and doing a chkdsk /r. That will repair any boot files that may have been corrupted.
