Have you tried booting the computer into Safe Mode? If you can, then you should do a virus scan, and check to see if any random processes are running. If you see any, delete them off of your computer, and restart and see if the problem happens.

Most likely you need to run the Windows Repair program on the XP CD. Put the CD in your computer and boot off of it. Then after it loads you should be able to repair your Windows XP installation.

apparently the CD drive does not work in Safe Mode. Not too worried as I have a laptop I can use for that. Now I want to go wireless with the XP PC, and wonder whether a dongle is the answer or would it be better to use an ethernet cable?

If you have a Desktop computer, check to be sure that all of the cables are connected, power and IDE signal. If it is a laptop, make sure that the drive is pushed in all of the way.

If the CD-Drive won't work after that:

Bend a paperclip straight as you can. Search the front of the CD-Drive for a small hole. Put the paperclip in there, and the CD-Drive should be forced open if that is the problem you're having. Make sure to move the tray some and check for obstructions in the gears.

If you tell me the exact problem, I could help more.
