Desktop icons fail to remain

June 6, 2012 at 13:47:33
Specs: Windows XP
In windows XP sp3 desktop icons do not stay. This happened when I tried to move an icon from the
administrative tool section to the desktop. All image icons, photos and most program icons are gone. When I d&d an icon it briefly shows up and then evaporates. No virus detectedHelp appreciated.

You could run System Restore using a date before you did this. It might be safer to copy & paste system items rather than using drag and drop.

EDIT:
See #3 below.

system restore doesn't do anything to the users profile which is where the desktop resides.

I actually figured that the permissions area was my way out. Unfortunately the permissions icon does not bring up any way to rest the security or admin role.
