Solved Desktop Icons and taskbar missing

April 11, 2011 at 08:35:13
Specs: Windows XP
I deleted an entry listed in the AVG startup titled
SHELL - \ini\system.ini\boot\shell - SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\\currentversion\winlogon

I tried listed solutions online for most of the day nothing worked...
Solution
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\system.ini\boot]
@="SYS:Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\WOW\\boot"
"ScreenSaverActive"="USR:Control Panel\\Desktop"
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"="USR:Control Panel\\Desktop"
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="USR:Control Panel\\Desktop"
"Shell"="SYS:Microsoft\\Windows NT\\currentversion\\winlogin"

The key being the last line. Edit the registry to the top path and add or edit the shell key.

Access TaskManager by alt+ctrl+del select tab "processes". Do you see explorer.exe in the list? If yes than go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...
scroll down to 195 to Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar.

Please let us know if our advice was able to help you.

That was amongst the solution I tried. The solution listed in the question fixed the problem (I put it here in case someone else had the same problem)
