desktop icon unlock xp

June 14, 2011 at 16:50:37
Specs: Windows XP
My desktop icons became locked in place after installing a registry cleaner program. Before I realized what happened I uninstalled the program, so I can't use the restore point that the program set up. The other thing that happened is that I can no longer drag and drop items (folders, files etc.) between folders. Is there anyway, short of reinstalling windows XP, of fixing this problem?

I haven't got XP open at the moment, but I'm sure there was an option to 'lock desktop items' - right-click an area of the desktop and have a look under 'arrange icons by'. Failing that have you tried a System Restore? - the registry cleaner may have screwed that as well, but it's worth a try.

Thanks johnr, unfortunately neither of these approaches work. Something is definitely amiss. Short of reinstalling XP what else can be done.

The tech support for uniblue (the registry booster program that has caused the problem) has tried for several days to help. The thing they want me to do next is to use msconfig and UNCHECK all the boxes within STARTUP and SERVICES. Needless to say I'm a bit reluctant to do this, but I guess I can recheck the boxes and reboot yet once again (aaaaarrrrrrrgh!)

I haven't mentioned that the problem I'm having also

won't let me cut and past desktop icons from on spot to another.

AND,

I can longer drag and drop files between directories.

THIS IS BAD.

Certainly using msconfig won't do any harm, but that implies that they think it's a program you have running that is causing the problem, rather than an error in the registry, which would be my first thought. To see if their idea has any merit you could always just restart in safe mode and see if you can do your dragging etc.

There's a possible registry fix on Kellys Korner - 'drag & drop fix' - number 233, right-hand column.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't see your suggestions until after I found a solution myself using Google. The fix is to do the following:

START RUN regsvr32 ole32.dll

and the drag and drop problem is solved. You are correct that the problem was in the registry, which is where I thought it was.

The fact that the icons were "locked" in place only meant that drag and drop wasn't working.

I couldn't find the location within kellys korner that you refer to. None of the kelly korner solutions have numbers on them, as far as I could find.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Glad you found a solution - Kellys Corner is a very useful source of odd fixes for XP - definitely has numbers down the left column.
