I was given a Dell optiplex 240 with no HDD. My question is if I seen an ad with someone selling a recovery Dell cd with XP sp2, will that cd work in this pc with a newer HDD?
I do have a product key sticker on the case by the way.

Kind of difficult to tell. Recovery cd's are tied to some part of the system sometimes. Not sure where the product key came from.
Dell uses OEM keys that don't activate through MS, they simply control keys. I doubt it would be worth the risk in money to even try it.

Since you would need to also get a hard drive, consider using a live cd. Try Mint 8 and see if it is good enough to be used.

I got my Recovery disk from it was a good price and worked on my optiplex 270 and latitude. No key needed. It's built into the bios. Try using coupon code 10off to get 10% off.
