Dell optiplex gx280 crashes on XP install

January 15, 2010 at 09:16:48
Specs: Windows xp pro install, Intel Celeron 2GHZ
Hello, i am in a bit of a problem. I am onsite
right now at a large business firm and doing
various hardware installs and swaps. I am
stuck on one workstation, a dell optiplex
gx280. Windows xp setup (and windows 2000
also) both crashing on installation. As soon it
says 'starting windows' in the very beginning
the PC restarts automatically (first time gave a
blue screen stating no mountable boot drive,
now restarts). My experience with this has
always meant i needed the f6 drivers, only
thing is DELL WEBSITE DOESNT HAVE
THEM FOR THIS MODEL! I searched
frantically online and tried every intel matrix
driver known to mankind with no luck. I need
the right one, or perhaps there is another
problem i am overlooking? I am a lone tech on
site so i cannot consult with my 'team', you
guys are my team! I know the dell installation
cd's would probably work but the client lacks
them, so i need to use my xp cd's. The
resource cd isnt available either. PLEASE
HELP IF YOU CAN, VERY GRATEFUL and
VERY URGENT for me and my client.

First thing I would do is to test the hard drive. Also when you started the install, did you choose quick format or full format? I had similar problem a while ago when I used quick format, however when I did the full format (takes ages!), everything was fine. Do you have another gx280 there? If so try installing Windows on that one and then put the hard drive back in the problem computer. It may also be worth running Memtest86.
Here is a Microsoft link that might help..

Thanks guys, turned out the system is a custom built,
non model dell with a proprietary intel board (not an
optiplex with a standard intel board as I expected). Stupid
b---tards at dell used a case that says optiplex gx 280
when it wasnt, it was a proprietary custom build corporate
computer. I had to call dell to get the drivers ... get this ,
not available on the web ANYWHERE, only on the dell
resource cd that came with that computer, which is
created when the custom pc is ordered, i had to reorder it,
found the drivers. When i asked dell why the drivers
werent online they had a whole speech about custom built
pc's and other BS. So next time dell reassures you that
ANY DRIVER YOU NEED is on thier website, dont
believe them, ask around and hopefully you find this
post.

Thanks for all of your support guys.

Oh, yea, the hard drive is brand new, out of the box and
fully tested on another machine. Bios settings are exactly
what they need to be. I cant even get to the screen that
lets me choose full or partial, either, as soon as the blue
install screen hits the part where you hit enter to install or
f3 to exit, it restarts the system. And the setting for
'restart on crash' is off - go figure.

Dell has assured me this is a common problem and the
resource cd which my customer now had to pay for
(replacement), will fix this problem. I hope so, they say
its a common problem, ive never had a case where i
couldnt find the drivers for a sata controller, they either
come with the board or they are on the web, i guess if its
a dell they pick and choose which boards to support.
