Dell Laptop screen went black.

Specs: Windows XP, Celerium/1GB
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop running Win XP. The other day the screen went black and I can't find any way to get it back to working. It happened when I powered up. The screen flashed on momentarily and died straightaway, as if coming on had triggered a failure. I am running an external screen which works fine.

Any help most welcome, but please explain what you think I should actually DO to fix it, rather than just stating what might have gone wrong. 'It sounds like the extrapolation module' might mean something to a technician, but isn't much help to me!

Many thanks.

1: Check your manual for using the Function keys ( FN ) maybe toggling will get the screen back.

2: Go into the bios & make sure the monitor settings are set to LCD.

This is often caused by a laptop overheating.. when a laptop overheats, the first thing to fail out is the graphics.

Try booting the laptop up in different Safe Mode's.. safe mode uses the bare minimum graphics and requires no strain on the laptop whatsoever. If the laptop boots up in Safe Mode and the graphics are there, then you need a new motherboard.

Hope this helps!
