Dell Inspiron 6000 gets very slow after a day

Dell Inspiron 6000/9200/9300/9400/e1705/...

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium M / 2 GB
Dell Inspiron 6000 gets very slow after a day of being up. I put in 2 GB RAM and new hard drive when old drive started going bad and reinstalled everything and it was ok for a little while. Now it gets very slow after a a short while sometimes, I use 100 Mbps network line. I restart and sometimes defragment the drive and it gets fast for a little while. Any suggestions on what to do. I run CA anti virus, anti spam and Windows firewall.

Are we talking computer speed or internet speed? Remember your computer very little to do with your Internet Speed other than if it has a virus.

If it is computer speed then it is either too many programs that start up automatically, viruses, or hardware.

If you rule out the first 2 then it is probably hardware. If your CPU fan fails or is clogged the system could be over heating. Being that you just switched out the hard drive I would look into this. You can check your computer's temps using speedfan...

http://www.almico.com/speedfan442.exe

If it is software then we need to know what is running on your computer. You can get this information by running the following command...

TASKLIST > c:\tasklist.txt

Open your C: drive and open the tasklist.txt file and post the contents.

It is computer speed, I will check the temp and software tasklist then, thanks. The CA anti virus is up to date and runs full scan with no viruses found so don't think its a virus.

Check your CPU temp. Replace CA with Microsoft Security Essentials.

I need to do some more work on this laptop, but I removed CA firewall which was installed but disabled, using windows firewall, and removed kodak easyshare. need to check what else we're not using that I can remove. And check into using different antivirus antispyware, CA version I have is free version from Time Warner, I've used AVG free one before so may switch to that.

Laptop ended up getting windows system file missing, not sure if was virus. Ended up formatting hard drive and reinstalling windows from cd and put new free 2010 CA antivirus on it, using windows firewall and it is running fast. So must have had too many programs running and maybe virus also.
