Solved Dell desktop Card Reader keeps Disappearing

June 6, 2012 at 19:22:59
Specs: Windows Vista, Pentium 4 568 GB
I have a Dell Inspiron 530. It came with a 19 n 1 card reader in it and it was working today, I put in an sd card and it took my pictures off. Then I went to put in a compact flash card. and it detached itself from my computer.. It doesn't even show up. I have tried to reinstall the drivers.. And they don't work.. This has been a recurring problem. What can I do?

Troubleshooting can't get a memory card to be recogized properly, in Vista (the same things probably apply to Windows 7; similar applies to XP and 2000).

The circuitry of older memory card readers cannot recognize newer larger capacity memory cards, or types of memory cards that first came out after the card reader was made, at all.

For an external card reader, you may need to plug the USB cable into a different USB port in order for it to be recognized properly.

All the info you need to troubleshoot what you problem is is referred to in response 1 in this topic, especially at the first link pointed to in that, which I made because I was tired of typing the same troubleshooting things over and over again.

If you don't understand something in that,
- tell us what you don't understand.\
Select, Copy the text, Paste in your post, if you need to.
- Or - have someone help you and have them look at what I referred to

Drivers for a device do not suddenly stop working, unless the data for that has been corrupted on the hard drive, in which case your hard drive may be starting to fail. If you're not having oddball problems with anything else other than related to the card reader and the memory card(s), then it's extremely un-likely the data for the drivers is corrupted.

Something of a long shot but try turning off the computer, removing the mains plug then holding in the on/off button for about 20 seconds. It might sound odd but I've known this fix some transient problems.

Any errors showing in Device Manager?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
