Crash? No desktop icons or Start Menu

Microsoft Windows 7 home premium

Specs: Windows XP
I turned off the computer after downloading some music. And when I turned it back on a couple of days later I waited for all my icons and start menu to pop up on the screen. It never did. The screen remained only with my desktop background picture. So I know its connected correctly. The only way it can be shut down is through the task manager. I've tried multiple times to turn it on but the same thing just happens. Now mind you the desktop is over 6 or 7 years old. I need help! Let me know if it can be saved or to just "trash" it.

Try this:

(Original Message, and Response Number 1 looks like a fix?)

Also try this:

and

(That one is a special Posting someone made of how he fixed it.)

Another fix is un-quarintene explorer in Spydoctor.

A window pops up and it says " Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

What's about booting from installation CD and repair the installed system?

It sounds like you might have to run the repair through an installation CD or the recovery console if you can get to it.

I've had problems in the past where the desktop has crashed and all icons have disappeared, but this is usually fixed by restarting explorer.exe

Can you boot in to Safe Mode? Or using the Last Known Good Configuration option under boot settings?

I'd suggest you run a virus scan if you can get back in to Windows.

Yeah windows XP. I've tried to start up through the safe mode by pressing F8 but the computer wont enter the screen and continues to start up normally. Unfortunately im very basic to the computer and I do not know what the installation Cd is. And for some reason internet explorer and firefox has been deleted completely from my computer.
