converting raw to ntfs

Specs: Windows XP
switched my external on and it will not open, just wants to format, go into properties and it has turned into a raw file?????

you can't convert raw to ntfs. you have to partition first.

If it was formated , try 'testdisk' advanced option-boot record 'not sure of exact wording'. Be sure to read the Docs first.

As TopFarmer suggested, testdisk may be able to fix your corrupted partition. The usual reason for that to happen is improper removal of the drive. You should always use the safely remove option in Windows before disconnecting an external drive.
