Specs: Windows XP
The computer was given to me and had been used previously by a family who let their child use it. Before I had the computer wiped of all of their information, the people working on it told me that there were many viruses on the computer. I used the computer fine running Windows XP for a few months and just recently I tried to turn it on and it first tells me that it needs to do a disk check and once it moves past that it goes to the main screen where I enter my password, but after I enter the password all the computer will show is "Welcome" and it will not move past that. How can I fix this?

First when the computer is booting before the XP logo Shows that windows is loading like right when it boot's press the F8 key to get boot options Try load last good settings that worked, if that has the same error then reboot press F8 again and this time try Safe Mode. If none that works you can try Reinstalling.

Reinstall Windows XP, put your Install CD in the drive make sure in your bios that the boot priority is set to boot from CD First. Boot the CD proceed to setup XP somewhere in the Process you should see an option that says to repair a previous XP Installation do what ever it is to select that option, do not select recover you don't want to recover XP you want to Repair the Installation which if available as an option will then recover all your installed programs and files after reinstalling Windows XP the plain recover console thing is for more advanced settings and will not recover anything on your XP Installation. If you don't see an option for Repair than then your only other option would be to just select fresh Install.
