Computer wont boot windows (XP)

Specs: Windows XP
I was installing an audio driver, and got a blue screen.

When I restarted the computer it would load to a blank desktop with no icons, no start menu, no tray, nothing.

No keys worked except Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which from there I could select File/New Task (run). I ran 'explorer' hoping just to get something (I was actually thinking that I could save some files). From there the computer appears to run perfectly, exactly as you would expect.

I did a virus scan and found a virus (LD08.exe), after several hours of scanning, I've managed to remove all infections from my system.

However whenever I restart it reverts to the blank desktop. I can run 'explorer' to get windows back but its obviously a pain.

I have tried to to a system restore, but it doesn't seem to work....It will run, the computer will restart, but back to the blank desktop (I assume the restore needs to complete certain actions after the restart which its not able to do).

Any ideas on a fix?

"...I was installing an audio driver, and got a blue screen..."

... did the driver have the infection?

"...I've managed to remove all infections from my system..."

...does that mean you turned off system restore?... as I was going to suggest that you do a "system restore " in "safe mode"

... to go back before the driver installation... after an infection and "cure"...its best to turn off the system restore ...reboot and turn it back on so that the infection dos'nt reappear.

... so if you hav'nt turned it off how about going back to when everything was "ok" ... scan for virus... see what happens!

... got brain freeze
