Computer will not respond

Specs: Windows XP Home
After running an Avast update the computer starts Windows normally, but I cannot get any software to initialise. When I put cursor on task bar I get the processing icon, but there is no disc activity and no further progress is possible. How do I roll back to a good configuration? Thanks.

If you have system restore enabled, select start, then programs, then accessories and then system restore. Pick a restore point before the AVAST update.

Nothing will start, can't access system restore! Have tried F8 and last good configuration, but that just takes me back to the same place. Cheers

Try entering the safe mode, without networking, instead of last good configuration. Then try system restore.
