computer will not boot up on xp system

May 15, 2011 at 14:44:54
Specs: windows xp home edition
I have a dell desk top w/windows xp home. I have a blue screen which states "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to protect damage to your computer." This screen has appeared more than once. It further states to "disable or uninstall any anti-virus,disk defragmentation or back up utilities. to check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. To run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and restart your puter. Any idea on how to go about this & what to do next? Thanks.

Try tapping the F8 key at boot up and see if it goes into Safe Mode. Then post back. Could be a hard drive failure.

Tried f8 during system start up. Black screen with white lettering stating: Primary drive 1 not found. Secondary drive 1 not found. Alert! OS install mode enabled. Amount of available memory limited to 256mb. Strike f1 key to continue, f2 key to run the setup utility. whats next? thanks!

Sounds like your hard drive failed. Look in your BIOS to see if it's listed. Even if it is, it doesn't mean it's good. I hope you backed up.

Unfortunately not backed up. When I hit f2 for set up during the boot up, it says on the very top of the page my bios version is A01. It's nothing I can "highlight or click on". Is there another place it tells you this info? If so, how do i get to it to see? thanks for your time & patience!

"It's nothing I can "highlight or click on"

Since few machines load any kind of mouse support when entering the BIOS, you're pretty much required to navigate using the keyboard. Look at the bottom of the screen for navigation instructions.

If you have a USB keyboard, you may have to swap it out for a standard (PS/2 type) one before you can navigate as well.
