computer running very slow

Specs: Windows XP, pent 4
I keep getting a pop-up window telling me I'm that Firefox is using excessive memory. If I switch to Internet Explorer, I get the same message concerning Internet explorer. What can I do to reduce my memory usage.

Please list your system specs. It's difficult to offer any advice when we have no idea what you're working with.

You posted in the Windows ME section. Are you running Windows ME?

xp pro Someone told me to uninstall Mozilla and then re-install it. That didn't fix the problem

Not sure what specs to list other than my computer is a Dell Pent 4. I started out with a lot of memory but that was a couple years ago

Firefox can use well up to 512MB or more, depending on how much loads with firefox as far as the extensions and how many tabs and plugins are used. It just sounds like you need to install more Ram.

"Not sure what specs to list"

For starters:

CPU? Just saying it's a Pentium 4 doesn't tell us much except that your system is old. What clock speed? What FSB speed?

How much RAM - 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, etc?
What type - SDR, DDR, DDR2, etc?
What speed - 266MHz, 333MHz, 400MHz, etc?

And while you're at it, which anti-virus are you running & what programs are installed that load at startup?

"I started out with a lot of memory but that was a couple years ago"

Your confusing memory (RAM), that doesn't change over time (unless you install more),with hard drive space, which usally does decrease over time. They are not the same thing.
