Computer running slow

Amd / Athlon xp 1500+

Specs: Windows XP
My computer, especially Outlook, is running very slow. Checking the task mgr, I see "System Idle Process" using 98 - 100% of CPU. I have cleaned up disk, defragged the disk (57 GB available), run Mcafee on a daily basis, run Ad-Aware twice a week without any viruses or trojans being detected.

""System Idle Process" using 98 - 100% of CPU."

This is normal and is only telling you the processor is not being used.

Outlook/internet slowness can indicate infection.

Sounds like you are behind on your pc maintenance

Make sure you have updated your antivirus/anti malware and run them

run chkdsk /f at a cmd prompt to check for file table corruption. Answer yes to the question and reboot so it runs.

Uninstall unused programs

Run disk cleanup
Run disk defragmenter.

The AXP 1500+ certainly isn't going to break any speed records & you didn't bother to list your RAM amount. The "98 - 100%" idle process means the CPU isn't being used at all. McAfee sucks....get a decent antivirus program that won't suck the life out of your system.

Hi there,

Outlook can make your system a bit slow especially when you have default storage location for emails as C Drive.

I suggest you to move your storage location to other drive and this will definately improves your pc performance. you can set default storage location somewhere in outlook express properties.

Best of luck...

McAfee is probably the have to use MCPR.EXE to remove all the registry entries or else NO OTHER AV will work properly.

You may want to try Avast Free:
which IMO is much superior to the bloatware.

Adaware is also pretty redundant any more.

If it is still slow after removing McAfee you may want to run combofix:
Follow the tutorial on that site

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
