Computer Problems with keyboard functions

Specs: Windows XP
I am running Windows XP and recently I downloaded files to an external hard drive to free up disc space on my computer.
I then ran a disc clean up and defrag of my system. Since doing this my computer is not working normally to say the least. I can not go on the internet because when I try to type the dot symbol it only types in the arrow symbol above it on the same key. I have tried to hit the shift key but it does not change what it types in. The caps lock works in reverse when its on its lower case it's a capital letter and vice versa.
When I open files like D drive when I click on one folder others open and other windows open.
I have tried to use system restore but even though it opens it does not work I push the next key and nothing happens I have tried to check the create a restore point and it will not move. In short what ever happend has left my computer unworkable and I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me to help solve this problem.

Try System Restore again, this time in Safe Mode.
System Restore is accessed the following way:
1. It's a good practice to shut down all other applications before using System Restore, as it requires a full-system reboot to complete the installation. Connecting to the internet is not required, however. So shut all applications. Then click "Start."
2. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then the program will load.
If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode.
Toggle F8 or Press Ctrl ( depends on your comp ) during bootup ( just before, verifying DMI pool, message comes on )
Select Safe Mode.
