Computer crashed and now will not restart

November 28, 2010 at 21:52:17
Specs: Windows XP Pro, 2.53ghz/2gb
ok while i was using my computer (general useage) it crashed and started back up normaly for the first few times. Then it would not boot up and saying i was missing boot.ini i ran several prompts though CD repair but all said at some point that a file was missing or could not be found.at this point i removed my harddrive and backed up as much as i was allowed using a computer with similar settings. when i was transfering files to the other computer i noticed that all of system32 was gone. my goal is to retain my data especialy encrypted files in my documents, settings and that can go im only after my data(althought it would be nice to keep).
if i were to re install windows what would i be likly to lose?
thank you in advance

If you reinstall windows you will lose everything.
However if you do a repair install you will lose nothing. You will replace missing windows files.

Rather than do a two page "how to" google for repair install.....easy if you follow the directions.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixth...
both came up at some point with errors, could anyone suggest a link that would have more success?

If you all your data is backed up safely in a remote place. You don't have to worry about re-installing windows. Most especially if encrypted. May be it depends on the type of online backup your using. The one I use maintains old and deleted file versions for life. I use; www.safecopybaackup.com. Good luck!
