compaq presario windows xp boots very slowly

January 30, 2011 at 12:33:12
Specs: Windows 7 xp, Athelon 2.0 732ram
My Presario, 265 Meg processor, 120G HD, takes about 14 minutes to boot from Cold. The HD keeps running and running like there was a very large file that has to load. AFTER it finishes, and the HD stops, it runs just fine......quick, snappy and fast on the Net. I have shut down all but a very few essential startup programs, but it still takes ten minutes to boot. Task Manager shows that AAWService and System Idle Process are taking the majority of the resourses. I am running the free home version of Avast. Now, once it has booted from cold, a ReBoot is only about 2-3 minutes. Any ideas?

Has it always been slow?

Have you fitted a new or extra hard drive?

Are you networking?

Could be the HDD is not running at top speed when doing cold starts.
Mechanical devices do have problems.
For my Laptop, I did not use it for a long time, then
it took 20 minutes to boot.
System Idle Process is high when computer is not doing anything.
