Compaq presario 6254ea lifeless

Hewlett-packard / 6254ae

Specs: Windows XP home edition, amd athlon xp 2200+
When I say lifeless there is a little life in it:
The computer will start and using f10 I can access the part where you can change boot order etc...(I do not know if this was a good thing as over a period when I was getting impatient with the computer sometimes showing unmountable boot vloume error,I have changed some settings and forgot the defaults)

I have the recovery disks but as they are not being recognised they are useless to me in this situation.
Does anyone know how to 1:Download a disk which will get me into dos to erase disk from there and hopefully re-load xp home edition or;
The very basic configurations I should have on my system to ensure all things are correctly set and the only other problem I have is a recovery disk.

I beleive the reason for the problem was a file deleted inadvertently.

If anyone has any answers I thank you in advance.

unmountable boot vloume error

This generally means you have a corrupt boot sector (but can mean hard drive is dying).

To fix this error if the drive is ok you need an xp install disk (doesn't matter whcih version, borrow one if necessary) to get into recovery console.

You need to boot the machine from the xp Cd (so boot order must be optical drive first - can set in bios, sometimes also key for one off selection). When it gets to screen to set up windows, hit the R key - this will start recovery console (it may ask for Administrator password, which is usually just blank - but usually doesn't when you have this error message.

At the command prompt type chkdsk c: /p and hit enter. When this has completed (should say it found errors), type fixmbr and hit enter and then Y when it asks. Then type fixboot and hit enter. Now type exit (will restart machine), and boot normally - hopefully your installation will be back up.
