Compaq mini 110 netbook won't start up after installed AVG

Specs: Windows XP
installed avg 2014 was prompted to restart comp
clicked restart now
comp went thro normal routine
received screen saying " please Wait "
then received screen saying " Windows is Starting up... "
but it did not .
removed all power & battery
replaced and tried again no change
have checked hard drive and memory both ok.
but no change

Start Windows in Safe Mode and uninstall the AVG software.

Then restart Windows normally and install Avast Antivirus Free instead:

Scroll down to bottom of the page and you'll see the download button for the free version.

removed all power & battery
Having done that hold the Power Off/On button down for about 20 seconds. It "sometimes" gets computers out of a loop.

I recall a similar problem with AVG and Windows ME, and somewhat later with XP-sp1... I gave up at the time, in both cases, and installed the Kaspersky freebie of the time.

Suggest you follow Derek's tip first; and if still "no joy" then follow phil22's advice.

If you do end up uninstalling AVG try to disable the real-time feature if at all possible. This applies to any AV or third party firewall and is the reason they sometimes uninstall badly. You can also get an AVG uninstaller which can get rid of remnants and seen by them as a last resort:
