Cloned XP is missing Start menu & Taskbar

August 7, 2012 at 08:45:48
Specs: WinXP , 2.6Ghz 1Gb
I've cloned XP ,but it has no Start menu/Taskbar . I ran a scan and clean-up before I cloned it . I can get into Task Manager and run explorer.exe but still no Start or Taskbar . Ctrl + Esc doesn't bring up any Taskbar menu. Cloned it twice (XXClone) with the same result . All the desktop is there and folders open fine . Any ideas?

Then the clone failed. What else has failed and why? Some data issue maybe, some hard drive failure or memory bad? Cpu even.

Just load up a new xp install on this drive and apply all service packs and updates, install a good security suite, use limited user accounts for all daily tasks and then put in your applications and old data. Then make a gold image of that for use later. Use ntbackup maybe or ghost or acronis.

Hi , thanks for the reply. The cloned disc is on the same machine , same CPU and memory , and I scanned it for bad sectors etc . The origin disc works ok , I would have assumed the clone would function the same . I wondered if other cloning software had better results .

XXclone ought to work. I don't know the exact basics of it to say why. If it is a file by file copy and it uses shadow copy then many of the backups that use it might also fail.

I'd test memory. These types of programs really need to be near bit to bit perfect. Any data error in any part of the system can cause this. As to why two exact copies fail might lead you to a better answer.

It is easy to get some other free or even load ntbackup (on cd) to use. Be sure to use system state also on ntbackup.
