Clanking noise from computer

July 12, 2010 at 01:23:40
Specs: Windows XP
When I switched my computer on I heard what can only be described as a mechanical noise. The boot up consisted of a dos screen with information on and the stopped, the HD then seemed to stop, does this sound like a terminal HD problem or is it possibly a loose fan.

If the boot did not complete then I'd guess your hdd went awol, a fan gone crazy wouldn't stop the boot unless there is a rotation monitor.

Not really, but don't tell her that. Engineer came HD is defunct, lost all unless I lay out a bundle, decided to get a bigger HD and upgrade to Windows 7, and he will get everything tweaked and I will keep my machine as he says it has very good specs and I would be silly to just get rid. Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone.

@Tonym - lost all unless I lay out a bundle, decided to get a bigger HD

As in other contexts bigger is not necessarily better, a hdd can crash at any time, even a new one straight from the box.

Three ways to avoid critical file losses:
1: Backup
2: Backup
3: Backup

Good luck

Cheers Wahine, I do have another 500gb external HD and most of my stuff is kept on it. I might ask the engineer about "ghosting" the new drive. Thanks again.
