chkdsk deleted a lot of stuff

Specs: Windows XP
i shut my laptop down to go have dinner (i'm at a resort in mexico with my family) and when i sat back down in the lobby to check my e-mail and stuff, it came up saying it wanted to run chkdsk. 'sure!' i thought, 'what could go wrong?' the first step completed just fine, but the second step started deleting things like mad; too fast for me to read. then the third step completed just fine. it rebooted, and up came my desktop. only, 2 shortcuts were missing. firefox, and one i can't remember (i know it's missing cause there's a hole in my rows of shortcuts). also, several programs no longer work properly, including Adobe Reader and Notebook Hardware Control. from my event viewer, i have the whole chkdsk output, but the names of the things that were deleted mean almost nothing to me, and i won't clutter this by posting the whole thing unless someone thinks it might help. please help me understand what's going on!

Look in your C: drive and see if there are a bunch of files with the extension CHK. If so, that is where chkdsk has moved all of the files that were damaged (before check disk ran). If that is the case, here is some info on recovering them:

Keep in mind however, that if chkdks moved them, it was for a reason. Even if you recover them, the files may have some error that will make them unusable.
