How can I check if my files are intact on my hard drive if the operating system (windows xp) is not working?

If the operating system is toast your files are still intact. But the easiest way to check/retrieve them would be to plug the hard drive up to another computer (slaving it) and getting them manually.

But I can just about guarantee your files are still there. Nothing short of the hard drive having a physical issue then your files might be corrupt.

The easiest way, to retrieve your files is, to use a Linux LiveCD.
Start your computer from this CD and copy the files you need, to a USB Stick.
