changing multiple extensionless files to .dat

February 8, 2011 at 10:15:22
Specs: Windows XP Home
I have around 500 files with no file extensions that i need to change to .dat files. I've tried through the dos rename command which allows me to change the file extension for files which already have an extension however when i renamed my extensionless files ie. putting filename.dat the renamed files still had no extension. I would be really greatful for any ideas.
Thanks
Michael

... place them all into the same folder (this folder is called 123) ie C:\123

... @ command prompt type ren C:\123\*.* *.dat [press enter]

Make sure you have unchecked system and hidden files as well as hide file extensions in explorer tools/options/view

I suspect the files have extensions but you are not seeing them.

I agree with wanderer that the option to hide file extensions for common file types is probably checked.
