Can't utilize my Dell laptop DVD/RW drive

December 7, 2009 at 01:14:08
Specs: Windows XP
Plz help me!!! i am facing a strange issue that i wouldnt able to utilize my dvd/rw of my dell laptop inspiron 1525.. before this my drive was working well... ; the exact problem is that when i put some cds or dvds my drive make some processing noises and sometimes repeatedly do this but at last stays cool and calm and there is no sign of cd in it it couldnt able to open it and there is no recognition sign in my computer window.. windows shows no notices ..no errors.. also it states that "The device is working properly(in properties also in device manager) "
Actuaully according to my knowledge, this was happened after i repaired my windows xp .. later i checked for latest drivers for my computer but the only latest was available for BIOS i updated bios.. there was no need for other drivers but i did that and i think thats where i had done something wrong to my dvd/rw i installed one or more drivres availble in the list of CD/DVD (on the dell.com)that might be irrelevant to my drive but i did that or possibly some other driver irrelevant to my devices.. anyhow after one or two day it was noticed by me that i am unable to utilize my dvd/rw anymore..i have used f5 key during preboot process to check the error it shows something like 2000x0148 hard drive/optical drive - incorrect status...bla bla bla...

i have also checked the list availble in the device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers that are
1. Intel(R) ICH8M 3 port ATA storage controller - 2828
2. Inetl(R) ICH8M ultra ATA storage controller - 2850
3. Primary IDE channel
4. Primary IDE channel
5. Ricoh Memory Stick controller
6. Ricoh SD/MMC Host controller
7. Ricoh xD-Picture card controller

i had also did this that i unistalled the driver for my dvd/rw and let windows to install so it has now the latest driver for it ..and window states that "the device is working properly..."

Plz help me so that i will utilize my dvd drive normally like before i was using it....!!!!!!

Remember i have put many cds and dvds into the derive but the response is the same!!!

Simple test. Set the CDROM as first boot device in bios.
Put a bootable CD in the drive and reboot the machine.
Will it read the CD and boot to it? If not then the drive is faulty
It may be something as simple as a dirty lens or it may be the lasers have worn out. They do that.

If it reads the CD at bootup but won't in windows then you know there is a software problem. Work out which and post back.

If it won't read a bootable disc and you have run a lenscleaner through it then yes it's time to look at replacement.
