Since how long you are facing this problem?
Is it after installing any application or making any changes on your machine?
What happens when you do hard shutdown?
Did you try "system restore"?

What exactly does it do when he clicks to shutdown, nothing happens, goes to windows is shuting down and hangs, hangs at it is now safe to turn off your computer, gives some sort of error message?

I want to go like my grandfather did. Peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming at the top of my lungs like the passengers in his car.

Install a program called Speedfan. It will give you readouts on internal temperatures. If you notice CPU core temp going from say 43 deg C to say 75 deg C or higher after a half hour, you have a heat problem. If so, open the computer case and make sure all fans are running, and using a can of compressed air (radio shack, Staples, etc) to blow dirt from all heat sinks, etc. If fan(s) are not running, even after removing dust, replace.
Post back numbers before and after cleaning to be sure you are in a normal range again.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
