Can't revert to XP pro OS (on 2000 OS)

Specs: Windows XP
Can't revert to XP pro OS using a recovery disc after trying out 2000 0S.
Computer is a Compaq n600c. Message says 'cd not supported by 0S' when XP recovery disc is loaded.

You evidently are trying to upgrade while in Win2000. How did you install Win2000?

Actually, the Compaq came with 2 evo discs and 2 XP discs (recovery type). Had been using the computer with XP OS. Loaded the unopen Evo discs out of curiosity a few days ago, never thinking it 'impossible' to get back to XP OS. It's obvious I'm a beginner, having lots to learn.

Are you starting the computer with Recovery XP disk in its drive. ????

Yes, Chuck, that's when I see that message saying the cd isn't supported by the OS.
On 2 previous occasions, I'd no problem reformatting using the XP recovery discs. But those times had the XP OS still on the Compaq. This time round, it's the Win2000 on the Compaq and that's the only difference I can think of.
