Cant re-install xp home

Specs: Windows XP, pentium 4
my laptop died, not too sure why, sister in laws fault, s owe re-formatted and went to re-install xp. problem is we only just realised that the serial number from the bottom of the laptop is missing 4 digits and the laptop wont accept any other code. The laptop doesnt come with a recovery disk so i cant think of anyway to recover the serial number, any ideas?

a-vanderhoeven, can you still get to the old installation? If you can, how about using 'restore' to go to a time before she 'helped'?

Since you reformatted and have already reinstalled over the reformatted drive, it will be next to impossible to use a recovery program like Get-Data-Back although that would be the first option I would look into. The second option is to contact microsoft and explain to them that the last 4 didgits of the COA had been destroyed and just see what they have to say about it. They have sent me some new licensing stickers( no media) on some customers computers for a minimal charge. Microsoft is the only one that can do anything like that. The manufacturer can send you replacement media and licensing but will charge highly for them!

Compaq's usuually have a Hidden Recovery Partition, press F10 at bootup..

And when you get it all working again... make secure copies (hard copies, and also a text file or two - stored in places various, including off the system) of the necesary license/COA numbers etc...?

Also ensure they are (again) complete on a base sticker too?
