Cant re-install XP after a major crash

Specs: Windows XP
Had run a computer maintenance software..sorry cant remember the name, and one of the things it did was cause my taskbar to disappear. Tried a number of things..Then thinking it might be a registry issue, used uniblue registry boost to try and restore the registry to an earlier date... This caused a major crash where all that happens when I start the computer is the screen stating windows did not start normally. selecting any one of the options such as safe mode etc. simply restarts the computer to the same screen. I decided to re-install the OS, but when I attempt do so with a cd another screen appears and one of the things it says is "no drive found, installation aborted". Further down comes a prompt at A\: but I am not able to type anything at that prompt. I went into the bios to change the first boot drive to the CD-rom.. no success. Help!!!

1st of all, don't use "snake oil" software to try to fix's usually just makes things worse.

2nd, if you're trying to reinstall XP & you have an SATA HDD, you need to install the SATA driver at the very beginning of the install or the drive won't be recognized. The driver has to be on a floppy disc & obviously you'd need to have a floppy drive installed. If you don't have one, you'll have to use a program called nLite to create an all new XP disc with the SATA driver slipstreamed onto it.
