Specs: Windows XP Pro sp3, 3gb
Dell E510 PC/ Windows XP (updated)...Working on this PC for someone. The problem is he could not open Internet Explorer by double clicking the desktop icon, but he can right click and click open without a problem. Other Icons function with no problem. I tried replacing the icon, I ran Malwarebytes and found nothing, I also ran scannow but none of this helped. Can anyone help.

Pity you didn't let us know that IE opens when doube clicking iexplore.exe before giving up because that proved that IE itself was fine. It aslo proved, as you rightly said, that this was a problem with the function of the icons. There are well known fixes for this.

Whatever, glad to hear it is now OK and thanks for popping back to let us know.

Would you believe there are two possible types of icon? The full default one has various features (Tools - Options etc). There is some procedure for re-creating that one I believe, so I can check it out if need be.

If you just want an ordinary shortcut to IE, then from My Computer follow this path
"Program Files > Internet Explorer". Find the file iexplore.exe in that location then right click it and create a shortcut. Cut and Paste this onto the desktop (delete the other one to the bin first).

You could also use the shortcut Wizard to do the same sort of thing if you prefer.

Tried you method below but no go. What exactly happens is, when I try to double click the IE desktop icon, on the icon darkens somewhat the after a while it brightens back to normal, but it never opens IE

i will have to check that, give a a little while

Yes, I can double click the icon in the Internet Explorer folder and and the browser pops right on. I guess I have a desktop problem, or an icons problem...Any ideas???

Now I have noticed that I cannot open ANY programs by double clicking their desktop icon, only when I right click and click open.

Just tried scripts called enabledisabledestopicons.vbs and xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs and also tried an exe association fix, none helped

UPDATE...I finally gave up and done a system repair install and everything is working perfect. Thanks for your input guys.
