cant open files downloaded or anything

Specs: Windows XP
hope you can help w/o knowing what product name?where to start? well had virus infection got rid of those,then i was "messing"around/exploring my comp(offline) changing stuff i prob.shouldn't of who knows? but now i can't open files,programs or download ANYTHING,it goes to which program do i wanna open with the only one i CAN open is pitures with fax/pic viewer when i try anything else with any proram i try it wont then i choose browse it takes me online where i find my way to what i believe i need but what'd ya know i cant download it to open it or download anything to fix my prob can you help?

bobbie67, my guess is that you messed with the wrong thing, but... IE opens most things. I'd try that first. Still no joy? Find a list of 'what opens what' @:

I remember another post where the problem was also file association after removing a virus but I cannot find it. I remember that there was a repair posted and I believe that it was a link to an article from microsoft. If no one else remembers it today and sends you there, try a search of MS support pages.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
