Second, Since you have not given us any information on the virus or the process undertaken to remove it we have little chance of advising on steps (if any ) to repair your current installation. You may in fact be better served to get a linux bootable CD and arrange to copy your important files & documents to external media, then wipe & re-install your operating system.
You may get away with booting to your XP Install CD and doing a repair-install over the top of your current system.
Q? Will the RUN box come up from your Start menu at present?
You may try to run the command SFC /SCANNOW with the XP Install CD in the drive. This is supposed to restore system files and may help.
