xp home can't join a domain so the message is a mystery. Looks like you will need to reinstall if you can't gain access.

Is there a list named 'Log on to' where you can choose another option?

Like wanderer said, XP home doesn't have the option to join a domain, so unless you entered it incorrectly you either have professional or you might be the first guy in history to ever have this issue.

could try multiple control-alt-deletes [if using the welcome screen] and when the logon box comes up type administrator and just hit enter [unless you assigned a password] to see if you can get in.

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode and try logging in with the default Administrator account?

You don't say who the manufacturer of the desktop is. Some will have a F12 key to hit on bootup to do a factory restore.

Otherwise you have to go buy a xp cd.

So, when you boot, do you see the Welcome Screen? Or do you see actual fields for username, password, etc?
