Can't log into 2nd OS on encrypted laptop

May 22, 2010 at 09:33:47
Specs: Windows XP, Intel 2Ghz/ 1GB
Not sure which category to post this one in.

At work they've just installed Guardian Edge Encryption on all laptops. I have a 2nd partition with a separate OS (WinXP Pro) that I use at home to keep my work partition for work purposes only. Following the encryption, which encrypted all drives, I'm no longer able to boot into my personal partition.

During boot it finds the 2nd partition, but when it tries to launch the OS it just goes into reboot.

Any ideas?

Because of the way Microsoft places the boot files some of them
for partition two were encrypted. How was the multi-boot done?

Did you contact your IT Department?

Not sure what you mean by how was multi-boot done. It's lookng at the boot.ini which looks like this:

[boot loader]
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional-Work" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Does this laptop belong to you? If not, heed Jennifer Sumn's advice - speak to the company IT/Security department. I do hope they are aware that you have been using it for personal use too.

Forget about the boot.ini - I doubt there is anything you can do to change the bootup sdequence set in place by GuardianEdge (now part of Symantec ever-growing organization).
