Solved cant install windows xp on a new hard drive

Specs: Windows 7, 2gb
i bought new 320gb hard drive for my laptop.I wanted to install windows xp on it,so i inserted a new xp cd.it was loading somethings but after it showed installing xp i got a message saying "volume not mountable,restart the computer if your seeing this message for the first time or check your ram for any problems".

what am i supposed to do.even the ram is new...its a 2gb ddr2 ram.oh yeah one more thing,i installed ubuntu 11.04 and it installed fine without any problems.

... it might be a MBR boot problem(?)

... try booting up/off a win98 floppy/cd ........iso download
(scroll to bottom of page wait 40 sec's) then type:

FDISK /MBR [press enter]

... is it a (click>>) Sata drive? ... if so Configure SATA as [IDE] #5 in your bios

no its an ide drive...i installed xp using the same cd on my other laptop(sony vaio) n it installed perfectly.
sony vaio configuration:

processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 2.40GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.0 GHz
System type: 32 bit

acer(in which i cant install xp) configuration:

processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core 1.8GHz(i know,i know pretty old)
Installed memory(RAM):3GHz
system type:32 bit

... is ubuntu still on the drive? did you install ubuntu before trying xp.

... if it's not on the drive now have you tried removing the partitions first?, then create partition and format the drive which should be an option via xp installation.

i still have ubuntu on the drive...i will erase it for now and install it later if its necessary coz i have not installed anything in it yet....yeah i know v can partition using xp installation but that message of unmountable drive pops out before i even see that screen....what should i do???oh i dont have any partitions in ubuntu...i installed ubuntu 2 check whether the hd is working properly or not.

But why is it showing me unmountable drive?

... link works one has to srcoll to bottem of page "please wait 40 secs" count down then click onto "download file now" (after countdown)
