Hi.
I did a clean install on my XP pro, sp2 and IE8 using the disk that came with the dell computer, the computer is fast and runs good now, however it will not accept any window updates (Manual of Automatic) an gives the error. The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.
One other small problem is when I go to Help the Index pane is X'ed out an the pane is blank. Before the new install I did not have these two problems.
Thanks everyone Joe.
The problem is you have SP2 which is no longer supported. You need to manually download & install SP3, then you will be able to run Windows Update. Download it directly from Microsoft & save a copy for future use, it's a fairly hefty download at approx 316MB. Here's a link:
From the security standpoint alone you should be running SP3 with all updates thereafter. See these also if you are planning to keep XP for a while: http://www.computing.net/howtos/sho...

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
I download and installed SP3 ok and it corrected the HELP problem, however now the machine locks up and continually searches for updates but reports no error.
thanks guys joe1
Hmm, that's not nice. Have you restarted the computer to see if that helps?
Otherwise this rather odd little trick "sometimes" unlocks loops:
Shut down and disconnect from domestic power. If it is a laptop remove the battery too. Hold the Power off/on button down for about 20 seconds. If you are lucky it will then restart normally once humpty is back together again.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
