Can't get past Windows login screen

Microsoft Windows xp professional w/sp2

Specs: Windows XP
When booting, I get to the logon screen and use Ctrl-Alt-Del. There is no response. Have tried two different keyboards and several USB ports on the PC. Have also tried Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration. Will try to run a system restore and chkdsk. Short of doing an in-place upgrade, does anyone have any other ideas for troubleshooting? Thanks

Might try a barts cd and use event viewer logs or see if you can do a Microsoft system restore instead of the OEM system restore. (dunno why they both are called the same)

Basically you don't seem to be able to access it from the hard drive.

Choices are limited. If you can do a restore point to a time when it worked it would be best. Second might be to try event logs for ideas if a single file is needed. Third might be a "repair: using the xp disk. Last would be to recover files using live cd and then use OEM restore disk.

Thanks jefro. Turns out that the keyboard was plugged in to the USB ports on the front of the PC and simply would not work there. Plugged in to the rear ports and it worked fine. What threw me off in troubleshooting was that my friend bought a brand new keyboard and used that one on both front and back ports but it didn't work. I suspect that the new keyboard is defective. In any case, plugged in the original keyboard in the rear USB and we're fine! Thanks again.
