Specs: Windows XP, intel p4 2.53Ghz/ 2G
i have HP754n home computer that originally came with win xp home. the hard drive has been wiped. I spent a good deal of time trying to find a legal and legit copy of win xp home to purchase. no luck.
my question is, since the machine is old enough to come factory with win xp, what OS could i use that isn't so old i can still purchase?

I find it annoying that you can't download from Microsoft directly when you have the key etc.
NOTE: This is a torrent so check it before you run it just to be safe :)

This is a NON-Cracked version so you will need your key to activate it.

That model can run only Windows XP because HP only have Windows XP drivers for it on their website: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...

If you were to install any other Windows version, Windows itself would run, but hardware devices such as sound, graphics & motherboard chipset wouldn't work properly, if at all.

HP do provide Recovery Media for HP owners who have problems like you have, but it depends on how old it is as Microsoft withdraws the distribution licence some time after the relevant Windows version has been discontinued.

For USA & Canada: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...

For Europe:

If you have a WinXP product key, it doesn't matter where you get Windows disc from. You can buy it, borrow it, or download it from the torrents. It's the key that makes it legal (or not).

Rider has it right. I have installed a retail version of Windows 7 on my Dell laptop using the key that came with the OEM Version. I have also used the same disk to install Windows 7 on my desk top using the OEM key that came with that computer.

I don't see any reason why the same cannot tbe done with Windows XP. All you need to do is beg, borrow or steal a Windows XP CD. The only proviso is that as the computer came with XP Home then you need an XP Home Disk. You cannot use and XP Home key to install XP Professional or vice versa.

Guys, I am pretty sure that Dell is an exception to the general rule. A key from an SLP version will not normally work on a full version. When dealing with WinXP you also need to have a home disk if the key is for home and the same goes for pro.

Dell disks will install on any computer that can run that version of Windows using the Dell key. I believe that Dell disks are just OEM full version disks that are Dell branded.

The mere fact that HP doesn't list any Windows 7 drivers does NOT necessarily mean Windows 7 can't be installed. In many cases Windows 7 may include all required drivers so the manufacturer doesn't post any on their site. The exception may be customized drivers like Realtek sound.
