Try: Right click the desktop > Arrange icons by > Show desktop icons. The three most important things in computing:
1. Backups, 2. Backups and 3. Backups.
kiran, Right click your Desktop, select "Arrange Icons By", then checkmark "Show Desktop Icons". Edited to add: Looks like aegis1 beat me to it.

Hi, if you open your Desktop folder in Windows Explorer, can
you see your desktop icons in that window. If you can, then
this case occurs if the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned
off.
Note: If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to
Windows XP, and Show Desktop Icons was turned off in the
previous Windows version, this setting is maintained, and
user icons appear to be missing from the desktop. The Show
Desktop Icons setting is ignored in previous versions of
Windows if Active Desktop is turned off. In Windows XP,
Active Desktop is always turned on and cannot be disabled. You can take these steps to solve this problem.
Right-click the desktop.
Point to Arrange Icons By.
Click Show Desktop Icons.
