Solved cant connect to microsoft for updates or anti virus websites

Specs: Windows XP
i cant connect to microsoft websites or anti virus. it tells me no connection when i do have one. my browser has been playing up recently now i know why. i have tried some remedy's from old post to no effect. i think i have covered the basics from what i have read. i ran a maleware chameleon whatever that is and it finally connected for its update n scan but problem remained after reboot.from info i have found so far hijacker or a term like it sounds similar to my prob. any help would be appreciated. im at the end of my limited knowledge thx.
i updated java script tried to download all anti virus programs, i turned some cache thing of in ms dos and a couple of other things i read in older chats on the topic.

Internet Options
Lan Settings
Automatically Detect Settings should be ticked - everything else untick

i might have solved my problem with a simple system restore which i ignored after reading it didnt help people in the past, haha thx anyway. if not ill be back begging for help thx.
