Cant connect to McAfee & Windows Update sites

January 14, 2011 at 04:03:22
Specs: Windows XP
I have XP and have just tried to update my McAfee subscription and found that it will not connect to the download, while doing this I also found that I am not able to connect to Microsoft updates either. I can get into the web pages etc. what may be wrong with my settings I have checked all aspects and there is no reason why I should not be able to connect to both of these sites. Can anyone help Please.

I know the microsofts update site uses ActiveX controls. Are yours enabled? You also have to use IE, not another browser to download the updates.

Had a Reply from Microsoft but they seem to want paying for any advice with no concern shown that I cannot use their downloads!
When I try to update or Download from the Microsoft or McAfee sites the following page comes up
http://search.freecause.com/?m=dns&...
with the message.......Cannot find update.microsoft.com DNS Error - Server cannot be found
Update is replaced by download and microsoft is replaced by mcafee depending on what site I am trying to get to.
I have tried blocking the freecause site, that does not work it still opens.
Is freecause a normal action when the site cannot be found.
Any further advice please.
Regards

To check your Internet settings, you need to do the following.
For Broadband:
click Start, click Control Panel, click Security Settings, click Internet Options, click Connections, click LAN Settings, tick Automatically Detect Settings, click OK, click OK.
For Dialup:
click Start, click Control Panel, click Security Settings, click Internet Options, click Connections, click Settings, tick Auto Detect Settings, click OK, click OK.

As for getting redirected to search.freecause.com this site has been known to contain some spyware and adware.(as reported by WOT)
Have you ran your AV software and MalwareBytes just to check thats not an issue?

I had already gave a link to ActiveX settings (see #7).

It looks as if you have installed a toolbar, either knowingly or unknowingly. Freecause is a search engine (not nice) which you need to get rid of. This might help:
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/questio...

There are a number of other options here in Google:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...

If all else fails it is very likely that MalwareBytes freebie will find and remove it. Just install it, then get its updates before running it.

Once you have fixed this problem I would set Internet Security back to default.

Thanks for all the advice, Tried it all but still get the message..... Cannot find update.microsoft.com DNS Error - Server cannot be found ( or McAfee)
Even via Google search engine
Malaware ran and gave me a list of files to delete, did this but still can't get into Mcafee or the Microsoft downloads

I will probably save all my files to Disk and re-load XP Not sure yet as the PC is running, it's just that I cannot download latest Updates and Security Files.

Thanks again.
Regards
Mike

Just a couple of things worth checking:

Follow this path:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

One of the files there will be called Hosts (with no file extension).
Temporarily change its name to XHosts so that it is disabled.

Reboot and try to get to those websites again. If it makes no difference just rename it back to Hosts

It would also be worth looking in IE:
Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites > Sites button.
Make sure they are not on the list.

Thanks again for all your advice.
Tried your latest but no go.

Finaly I deleted all programme files that I did not use including some toolbar ones. Don't know which was causing the problem but all is now okay and have downloaded McAfee and 26 Microsoft Updates.

Best wishes to you and thanks.

Mike

Sounds like you took a chance if you removed actual files but glad to hear it did the trick.
